Floating (sort of) the Frio

A group of my friends have a family reunion at Camp Riverview each year and they invited me to tag along this year. This area of Texas is in an extreme drought situation this year, but there’s still some water flowing in the Frio. It was nice to just sit in it and relax. Other area creeks and rivers are dry or have just a trickle. There was a small area that could be used for tubing, kayaking or paddleboarding, but most of the river is too low. Improvements have been made to the campground since last year according to my friends. The premium sites are nice and level and patios have been added. Pray for rain for this area!

Golf carts are welcome here or you can rent one and they come in handy since the park is rather large in size and it’s hot this time of year to carry gear by hand and walk.  Some people set up canopies to mark their spot on the river, but be aware that staff may pick them up late so don’t plan to leave them overnight. If you plan to drive in the park, the speed limit is 5 mph. Wrist bands are required during your stay.

There is a dog park and various sports activities in the park. Please don’t forget to pick up after your pets or children. They have planned activities daily, mostly geared towards children.

• Premium site, Central Park sites have a patio area looking toward the river with pergola top

• 🅿 Site Pad: Raised in the back to be level (watch small children), river rock base, level, long enough for camper and truck when unhitched, wide enough for another vehicle
• 💧 Water - low to the ground so hose and filter come off to the side along the ground
• ⚡ Electric max 50 amp
• 💩 Sewer connection in good condition
• 🔥 Fire Ring - but in a burn ban
• Picnic Table: wooden with metal legs
• Close to restrooms/showers
• Shade in the afternoon
• Full sun in the mornings
• A little green space between the next campsite and lower campsites
• Next to a road that leads to lower level and river - so a little extra traffic (but no campers on the front side of camper)

Regular cost per night $77.25 + $10 lock fee + $5 reservation fee
My total cost for 4 nights: $324 = Avg $81/night

In the Area:

• 🛒 Several small stores, tube/kayak rentals
• 🍽 🍺 Bar & grills on the way to and in Leakey (15 minutes)
• Look for Uel Jackson on the weekends at the Bear's Den or Back Porch
• Garner State Park is very close - a Texas Parks Pass is very handy
